I recently met Jessica at LOT 8 right here in Houston in the trendy Rice Village area where local fashion designer Chloe Dao and former Project Runway winner, hosted an event for emerging local designers.
Jessica's line is called Twenty Acres inspired by her country upbringing. I fell in love this the green floral dress below. The neckline was braided and the yellow sash is just so shabby chic.
I was able to do a "sort of" interview with Jessica via the only social network anyone seems to use these days....Facebook. Here's what she had to say.
ME: How did you get into fashion?
Jessica: I've always had a love for fashion. As young as I can remember I have been designing for Barbies or trying to sew something up with moms left over scrap fabric. I really knew it was what I wanted to do when I was a fine arts major in college and watching Project Runway I realized I had to give it a shot. So that next semester I transfered to a school with a fashion design program.
ME: What and who inspires you?
Jessica: I'm inspired by every day life, but I feel most inspired when I am at home in west Texas. If any one knows that part of Texas it's not known for having the most lush landscapes and greenery. I find beauty in golden wheat fields, wild flowers, and broken down barbed wire fences.
I am also inspired by other designers of course. It's magical to watch grand fashion shows, for 15 minuets it takes you to a dream land, well at least for me. My all time favorite designer is Alexander McQueen, his designs are truly pieces of art.
ME: Where did you go to school and what did you study?
Jessica: I went to a small Christian school in Abilene, McMurry University to study art. Then I transferred to Texas Tech where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Apparel Design and Manufacturing.
ME: What is your philosophy about the art of fashion?
Jessica: Fashion is just another form of art. A lot of the time it is mass produced but when a designer is draping a garment it is like working on a drawing or painting you have to step back and look at if from different angles the only difference is you have to make sure that what is beautiful on a mannequin will look the same on a real body and fit.
ME: If you could do anything else, what would you be?
Jessica: I would love be an interior designer. I'm always redecorating my apt. I love finding old furniture and making it come back to life with a new coat of paint and a little love!
Jessica also has a fashion shoot for her adorable line of dresses and they will all soon be featured on her upcoming website! Check back soon for an update, you don't want to miss out!
